Online Spanish article for IBDP Spanish ab initio / IBDP Spanish students – Learn Spanish through culture
“Your land always calls you back.” That’s a common Spanish expression. And I feel it every summer when I return to my hometown in Spain to celebrate the traditional festival of Moros y Cristianos.
As a Spanish tutor for IBDP and ab initio students, I often tell my students: if you want to learn Spanish online in a meaningful way, connect with the real culture. This is one of those stories.
A Celebration of Roots
These festivals are a symbol of identity. The entire town celebrates in the streets: parades, traditional music, costumes, and fireworks. It’s a way of going back to our roots.
When I was a child, I waited for this week all year. Now, even living abroad, I go back to celebrate it with friends and family. It’s a tradition that brings people together.
What are “Moros y Cristianos”?
This festival represents historical battles between Muslims and Christians in medieval Spain. Today, it’s a colorful celebration with music, dance, costumes, and joy.
