Learn how the IB Spanish Internal Oral Exam works. Tips for preparation, common pitfalls, and how 1:1 online tutoring can help your child succeed.

As we all guess, the Internal Oral Exam (IO) is an essential part of IB Spanish B and Ab Initio assessments. It tests students’ speaking skills, cultural understanding, and ability to analyse written and audio sources. The exam is designed to assess fluency, coherence, and accuracy, rather than just memorized content. It is basically the test in charge of measuring the student´s oral skills.

The IO is usually 10–15 minutes long and students respond to stimulus material, such as an article, image, or audio. They must prepare a brief commentary and answer questions from the examiner, showing analytical skills, vocabulary usage, and clear pronunciation. The IO test requires to describe the photo while you connect the photo theme with the cultural aspect. Here, examiners focus on: fluency, accuracy, range of vocabulary and grammar, ability to interpret the stimulus, and oral coherence.

As you can see, they do not need to describe a photo only in Spanish but to connect it to the Hispanic culture. So, students often struggle with nerves, vocabulary gaps, and structuring answers. In our Spanish lessons we teach the student how to do it and how to perform great by practicing past topics, building confidence, expanding vocabulary, and simulating the exam environment.
